Online Libraries
Type "public online libraries" into a search engine (see Resource 1). Online libraries offer plenty of opportunities for downloading free .pdf files. You will have to download Adobe Acrobat Reader to read many items but then you can easily transfer them onto your reading device or read them on the computer.
Request books from publishers through Netgalley.com. Many publishers will send you free book downloads of titles not even printed yet, all you have to do is ask. Some publishers might want a book review in exchange, but this is a small price to pay for a full book not even in stores yet.
Trade books with friends and relatives. Ask people you know if they love to read. They might have a good collection to trade with. People are usually more than happy to get rid of books taking up space, and you will both read something new in the process.
Trade books online at sites such as Paperback Swap or Bookcrossing. You can request titles and create lists for what books you want to acquire.
Go to the literature department or library of a university or college and inquire about books that are being thrown away. Many professors and librarians have collections in their possessions that are hidden away somewhere so it never hurts to ask.
