Book Clubs in Lansing, Michigan

Lansing, Michigan, offers plenty of book clubs for the avid reader to join. Adults and teens can find a group at one of the local libraries. Another literary club&'s members often share a beer over talk of their latest novel. Refer to the Meetup website in the Resources section to learn about even more book clubs in the Lansing area.
  1. East Lansing Public Library

    • The East Lansing Public Library hosts an International Book Club for adults. The club reads books that take place in or are written by authors from countries around the world. Books they have read so far are "Climbing the Mango Trees: A Memoir of Childhood in India" by Madhur Jaffrey and "Apples are From Kazakhstan" by Christopher Robbins. Besides discussions about the book, the club hosts speakers from these countries to discuss their culture and connections to the book. Participants in the club can access books from the library in e-book, audio or print form. The International Book Club does not run during the summer months.

    Brewpub Book Club

    • The Brewpub Book Club meets once a month at the Michigan Brewing Company pub in downtown Lansing. They meet the first Thursday of every month from 7 to 9 p.m. They tend to cover a range of genres, including historical fiction, pulp fiction, adventure, culture, fantasy and mystery. Examples of books read in 2010 are "Await Your Reply" by Dan Chaon and "Wolf Hall" by Hilary Mantel. Books are available at the Capital Area District Library or for sale in paperback form at the Schuler Books store, where members get a 20 percent discount. Although they meet in person, join the club online to find out about upcoming books and meetings. All are welcome.

    Delta Township District Library

    • Lansing&'s Delta Township District Library hosts three books clubs for adults and one for teens aged 13 to 18. The 39ers Book Club is a group of seniors that meet the last Tuesday of every month, throughout the year, from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. Examples of books they have read are "The Soloist" by Steve Lopez and "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortensen. The DTDL book club meets the third Wednesday of every month from 6 to 7:30 p.m. They have read books such as "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen and "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro. Every first Wednesday of the month, a third adult club takes place from 1 to 2 p.m. Their repertoire has consisted of "Loving Frank" by Nancy Horan and "The Beech House" by Jane Green. The teen book club meets on a Friday near the end of the month from 4 to 5 p.m. The first five teens to sign up at library’s youth desk get a free copy of the book. The teen club has read books such as "Heat" by Mike Lupica and "Notes from the Midnight Driver" by Jordan Sonnenblick. For all book clubs at the Delta Township Library, anyone is welcome to join.
