Free Speed Reading Tips

Speed reading is a useful skill if you need to read large quantities of information. Because it reduces your reading time, it can also improve your reading experience if you suffer from frequent eyestrain. Speed reading works by making it easier for you to focus on the words and expanding the number of words you read at once, according to Bismarck State College. Many speed reading techniques are completely free and can be utilized by anyone.
  1. Experiment With Different Methods

    • There are many different types of speed reading methods. For example, with the hand method, you place your dominant hand on the page and move it down slowly, following with your eyes. With the card method, you use an index card to cover up the words immediately after you read them. Other speed reading methods include the sweep, the hop and the zig-zag. Find the one that is best-suited to you by experimenting with the different methods. Time yourself to determine how fast you read with each method. Also compare your level of comprehension. The best method is the one that is both fast and provides a high level of comprehension.

    Set a Time Limit

    • Set a time limit for how long you will speed read. The time limit should be related to the content of your reading source. For example, if you are reading a complicated textbook, your reading time limit should be shorter than if you are reading a book for pleasure. Use the time limit as a guideline. If you find yourself losing focus or retaining less information, stop the speed reading process. Take a break to stretch your limbs, get a glass of water and then start again.

    Don't Read Aloud

    • Refrain from reading aloud while speed reading. According to Providence College, you read more than twice as fast as you speak, so if you read aloud, you slow your reading speed down significantly. Keep your mouth closed while you are reading, as even mouthing the words slows you down. If that doesn't work, try chewing gum to occupy your mouth. Initially, it may seem like a chore, but with practice, saying the words inside your head only will become habit.
