DIY Book Display

A book display rack in your home helps children quickly see which book they want to read by having the covers of the books face forward. Book racks can also display collections of antique or unique books. Book displays are useful in a store to help shoppers see which books they want to buy. Build your own book displays so you don't have to spend a fortune.

  • Drill with bits

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two of the pieces of pine to 6-foot lengths using the saw. Cut from the leftovers two pieces measuring 1 inch by 6 inches by 6 inches for the ends of your book display. Cut the third long piece of pine in half lengthwise to give you two 1-inch-by-3-inch-by-6-foot lengths, but you only need one for this project.

    • 2

Lay one of the 6-foot lengths flat on your work surface. Stand the other one on its side and butt it up against the first to make the back of the book display.

    • 3

Pre-drill the holes from one board into the other and then put in the screws to secure the two pieces together, forming the back and the bottom of the display rack. Put screws all down the length of the boards about 10 inches apart.

    • 4

Screw the two 1-by-6-by-6 end caps at either end of the book display rack to finish the edges nicely.

    • 5

Attach the 1-by-3 6-foot piece to the front of the book display, using the screws, to make a bar to hold the books on the display. Align the bar flush with the top of the end caps.

    • 6

Fill in all the cracks using caulk, and allow the caulk to dry for two to three hours.

    • 7

Paint the book display as desired.

    • 8

Find the studs in your walls using a stud finder. Hold the stud finder up to the wall and move it along until you hear it beep. Mark the location of the studs with a pencil.

    • 9

Use a level to make sure your book display will be straight and even. Hold the book display rack up to the wall and set the level on top. Put marks on the wall and the book display rack, then drill screw holes into the studs and the book display rack.

    • 10

Hold the book display rack up to the wall, and drill in the screws to attach it to the wall.
