How to Make Giant Paper Clip Bookmarks

A bookmark seems to be one of those things that you use when you have one, but if you don't have one you make do. Why not make a distinctive bookmark that will stay where you put it in your book, is easy to use, and looks neat?

Making a giant paper clip out of jewelry wire and a pliers is an easy project and will result in a bookmark that is both interesting and works well. If you help children bend the wire properly, they can help tie the ribbons to the top of the bookmark to place the finishing touches on this little project.

Things You'll Need

  • Jewelry Wire (10 gauge)
  • Wire Clippers
  • Tape Measure
  • Permanent Marker
  • Needle Nose Pliers
  • Paper Clip Pattern (see illustration)
  • Ribbon (1/8-inch width in colors desired)
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 22-inch length of jewelry wire with the wire clippers. Straighten the wire out to a straight length.

    • 2

Place the tape measure along the length of wire and place small marks at the 5 inch, 12 inch and 18 inch points along the wire.

    • 3

Use the pliers to bend the wire at the marks made in step 2 following the pattern to create a standard paper clip shape. Experiment as desired to make the paper clip look the way you want it to look.

    • 4

Cut one or two 6-inch lengths of ribbon and tie the ribbon to the top of the paper clip to create the tassles of the bookmark.

    • 5

Place the bookmark onto pages of a book to mark your spot.
