Instructions
Pick a book journal that you can carry. It should be be as portable as the book you're reading.
Attach a pen or pencil to the inside flap of the journal. You don't want to waste time hunting for a writing utensil when you could be recording your thoughts.
Record your thoughts at the end of every chapter. Summarize the events and your reactions while your thoughts are still fresh. You can go back to this portion of the journal with new perspectives as the book develops.
Write brief essays in response to the material you're reading. This can be a great way for you to engage in a dialog with the text as it remains fresh in your mind.
Keep the journal next to your bedside when it's time to go to sleep. Some of your best thoughts about the book may come just as you drift off to sleep or wake first thing in the morning.
Write for yourself. When you keep a journal it's for your eyes only. Knowing that allows you to explore your ideas freely with a strong sense of security.
