How to Bind Magazines Together Easily

You can't bear to throw magazines out, but they're cluttering up your home. The best way to protect magazines and keep them organized is through binding them together in the same manner bookbinders use to bind books together.

Things You'll Need

  • Tapestry needle, size 18 to 20
  • Heavyweight thread or string

Instructions

    • 1

Organize magazines in the order you want them bound; usually this will be according to date. It is recommended that you don't bind more than 12 thin magazines or 6 medium-width magazines together.

    • 2

Cut your back and front covers the same size or slightly larger than the magazines. Drill six evenly spaced holes with the awl about 1/2 inch from the edge you will bind together.

    • 3

Punch six holes through each magazine, 1/2 inch from the spine, with the awl. Line up all the holes in each magazine.

    • 4

Place the back cover down flat. On top of the back cover, stack the magazines evenly. Then top your stack with the front cover. Check for all the holes to be lined up.

    • 5

Thread your needle with a few yards of the sturdy thread or string that you've decided to use. Knot the thread.

    • 6

Go up through the bottom hole of the back cover, bringing the thread through the bottom hole of each magazine and finally through the bottom hole of the front cover. Bring your thread over the spine to the next hole on the back cover.

    • 7

Repeat Step 6 for each hole. Return to the top hole in the back cover after you've threaded the string through the top hole in the front cover. Pull the string taut but not too tight before tying it off.
