How to Be a Terry and the Pirates Cartoon Fan

"Terry and the Pirates" was a comic strip initially drawn by Milton Caniff. It began in 1934 and went on to become so popular that it spawned two different radio series, a television series and a movie. Its main character is Terry Lee, a young American adventurer who initially travels to the far East to search for his grandfather's mine. His adventures eventually included WWII and a complex relationship with one of the comics' greatest characters: the Dragon Lady. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Barnacle Press website and view the very beginning of the strip. Terry is the child. The adult with him is his traveling companion, "two-fisted journalist," Pat Ryan. As the strip progresses, Terry grows up, eventually no longer requiring Ryan's services.

    • 2

Listen to a podcast of the radio series.

    • 3

Purchase the 6 volume anthology of the entire cartoon strip through its website.

    • 4

Check out a biography of the strip's creator Milton Caniff. Caniff also created "Steve Canyon," which is considered by many as one of the half dozen most influential comic strips.

    • 5

Read a detailed review of a Caniff biography that includes an interview. Buy the biography, one of the most widely read books about Caniff.

    • 6

Read a biography of George Wunder, the Associated Press illustrator who took over the "Terry and the Pirates" comic strip in 1946. (Caniff left to do "Steve Canyon").

    • 7

Become a collector of Terry and the Pirates memorabilia. Go to one of the websites that auctions some of its original artwork. Monitor e-bay for items as they become available. Be aware that some items will be listed as the work of George Wunder and not "Terry and the Pirates."
