Sewing a Skirt Tighter

If you have recently lost weight and your skirt is now too large, consider making it smaller. Don't use safety pins to tighten the skirt, but resew it. Using a seam ripper and a sewing machine will conform the skirt to your body. The finished product will look more sophisticated than a quick safety-pin solution.
  1. Tools

    • For this project, you will need a sewing machine, a needle, matching thread, a seam ripper, sewing pins and measuring tape.

    Measurements

    • Regardless of the type of project, you always need to know your measurements. Measure around your hips at its widest part. Write down the measurement.

    Stitches

    • When you are sewing a skirt together, do not use the running stitch. Although it is simple and quick, the running stitch is not sturdy. Instead, use stronger stitches. For example, use a backstitch to sew pieces of a skirt together.

    Instructions

    • Undo the hems on one side of the skirt using a seam ripper. Turn the garment inside out. Reattach the two rectangles at the sides with sewing pins. Readjust the hem as you see fit. If the skirt needs to shrink by 2 inches, then make a 2-inch hem. Stitch the hem using a backstitch.
