Layered Reverse Applique Instructions

Traditional applique layers fabric pieces to all types of items, made of material such as quilts, T-shirts or purses. Reverse applique takes the craft a step further as you cut away pieces of the fabric to expose the material underneath your project. The resulting design adds visual interest and layered dimension to the project.

  • Background item or fabric, such as a quilt, T-shirt or fabric purse
  • Applique stencil
  • Applique fabric

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and iron all the materials for your project to remove any sizing so the materials lay flat.

    • 2

Cut out your applique design, leaving a 1-inch margin around your entire applique stencil. Pin the applique to the reverse side of the quilt so that the correct side of the applique faces the reverse side of the quilt or other item.

    • 3

Trace your pattern on the correct side of the material with the fabric marker or chalk pencil. Sew around this seam.

    • 4

Use a fabric marker or chalk pencil to draw a dotted line 1/8 inch inside the seam line. Cut around this line, taking care to cut through only the top layer of fabric.

    • 5

Pull up the applique so that it separates from the material of the item. Snip a small cut in the middle of the applique so you can freely cut out your design. Trim around the fabric, 1/8 inch inside your seam, to reveal the material underneath the applique.

    • 6

Use a zigzag stitch to sew around the applique. Tuck the raw edges underneath as you stitch to keep the design from fraying. Turn your project inside out. Cut away all excess fabric but 1/4 inch around the applique.
