How to Sew a Sweater Together

Once you've completed the pieces of a knitted and crocheted a sweater, you must put them together to form an item that you're able to wear. Attaching the separate parts of your sweater is usually done in a certain order. If you can't refer to the directions that accompany your sweater pattern for the specific order, you can follow a general sequence. If you regularly knit or crochet, the items you need to put a sweater together are likely ones you already have.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the pieces of the sweater. This allows you to follow the proper order without mistakenly skipping a piece in the sequence.

    • 2

Turn the sweater pieces inside out. This ensures that the seams you make to attach the piece aren't visible. Pin the pieces together to hold them in place while you sew.

    • 3

Sew the shoulder seams. This seam must be tight and secure to prevent the sweater from falling apart while you wear it. Use a backstitch and attach the sleeves of the sweater to the sleeve holes on shell of the sweater.

    • 4

Finish the neckline. Use a knitted or crochet stitch around the neck to give the sweater a finished look. Another option is to sew a strip of fabric or ribbon around the neckline.

    • 5

Attach the front of the sweater to the back down the sides. Starting at the armpit, sew down the side seam to the bottom of the sweater. Repeat on the other side of the sweater.

    • 6

Turn the sweater right side out. Make adjustments as necessary.
