Cute Ways to Make a Valentine's Shirt for a Teenage Girl

Many teenage girls enjoy the romantic symbols of Valentine's Day. Help your favorite teenager celebrate Valentine's Day by creating a cute shirt for her to wear on Feb. 14. Transform a regular T-shirt or blouse into a Valentine's Day outfit with some simple craft supplies or personalize the shirt by adding a photo to it.
  1. Fabric Paint

    • A plain T-shirt, button-up or blouse can be transformed into a Valentine's Day outfit with the help of some fabric paint. Buy paint made specifically for fabric use from a craft store and ensure that the the shirt you're painting is compatible with the paint. From there, choose a Valentine's Day motif to add to the shirt. Hearts are an obvious choice and can either be painted freehand with a brush or stamped onto the shirt with a heart-shaped sponge. If you want to avoid traditional hearts, try other romantic symbols such as cupid or lips, or write the name of the girl's boyfriend or crush on one side of the shirt over your heart.

    Tie-Dye

    • Tie-dye is another technique favored by many teenage girls. To tie-dye a shirt, tightly twist the shirt length wise several times and secure in two or three places with elastic bands. Apply a different color of fabric dye to each part of the shirt sectioned off by the elastics. After the dye has dried, rinse the shirt until the dye stops running, remove the elastics and let the shirt dry flat. To make a Valentine's Day-themed tie-dye, choose traditional Valentine's colors like red, pink and magenta.

    Photo Prints

    • Transfer photographs to fabric for a personalized Valentine's Day shirt. Most craft or sewing stores sell special fabric that can be printed on with a computer printer. Print off a picture of the girl with her boyfriend or a photo of her favorite celebrity or musician. Cut the printed fabric out in the shape of a heart and apply some iron-on interfacing to the printout and fuse it onto a T-shirt. Finish off the T-shirt by decorating it with fabric paint, sequins or other embellishments.

    Reconstructing T-Shirts

    • For teenage girls who want a more stylish silhouette for a special Valentine's Day outing or date, reconstruct a regular T-shirt to make a more interesting-looking garment. Crop the bottom of the shirt and cut out the neck band for a retro-'80s look or cut slashes on the back for a punk-rock style. Large T-shirts can be taken in to look more fitted or even transformed into a T-shirt-style dress. Once you've altered the shirt into a Valentine's Day-worthy garment, add a few Valentine's Day touches with beads, fabric paint or other decorative elements.
