How to Make Towel Robes for Kids

The terrycloth material used to make towels is warm, making it a cozy choice for creating a robe for your child. An old towel is economical, but avoid one that is worn in places because the robe will end up looking old. Purchase a new fluffy towel for the most warmth. The other materials needed to create a towel robe are available at sewing supply stores and are inexpensive. If your child is interested in sewing, this project is a simple introduction to making clothes.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the towel around your child. This ensures that the finished robe will fit. A beach-sized towel may be needed for taller or larger children.

    • 2

Fold the towel in half along the width. This means that the short ends should match up, creating a square rather than a rectangle.

    • 3

Cut a hole for your child's head in the center of the fold. Using sharp sewing scissors, cut a half circle centered in the middle of the towel's folded edge. When you open the towel, this will create a circle.

    • 4

Sew the side seams. Place the towel over your child's head, with the right sides in, and use pins to secure the sides, from under the armpits down. Place the towel on a sewing machine and make a half-inch seam down the sides, leaving the space for your child's arms open.

    • 5

Attach the sleeves. Fold each washcloth, right side in, and make a seam down the length of each, forming a tube of fabric. Pin one washcloth, right side in, to the arm holes on the towel. Sew a half-inch seam to secure them to the body of the robe.

    • 6

Make an opening in the front of the robe. Use sewing scissors and cut the towel up the middle. This allows your child to put the robe on without having to slip it over her head.

    • 7

Hem any raw edges. The sleeves and bottom of the robe won't need a hem since they are already finished. Put a half-inch hem in the robe's opening and around the neckline.

    • 8

Sew Velcro or snaps to close the robe. This will likely need to be done by hand with a needle and thread. An alternative is to cut a six-inch wide strip from another towel and sew the top and bottom shut. Then, make a half-inch seam down the length of the strip, leaving a two-inch section open. Turn the strip right side out and close the opening. Attach the strip to the back of the robe, which allows your child to tie her robe closed.

Decorate the robe. Add strips or ribbon, bows or buttons on the edges or the opening to create a customized robe.
