How to Use Binding Tape in Sewing

Binding tape is stretchable strips of fabric cut on the bias of the fabric. It provides a clean hem on quilts, clothing and blankets. When choosing bias tape, decide if you want single-fold or double-fold strips. A single-fold strip has its edges folded in; these are typically used on necklines and armhole edges. A double-fold strip is folded twice to create a ̶0;sandwich̶1;; it folds over the edge of the fabric. A double-fold strip is better for encompassing a raw edge of fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the binding tape in half lengthwise with the inside of the tape facing in. Trim the tape with scissors so that the length of the tape is a few inches longer than the perimeter of the fabric.

    • 2

Combine the fabric and the binding tape. If you are using single-fold tape, line the top edge of the tape evenly with the top edge of the fabric; if you are using double-fold tape, insert the fabric into the binding tape so that the tape ̶0;sandwiches̶1; the fabric.

    • 3

Fold the tape into a mitered pleat when you reach the corner of the fabric. To achieve this, fold the tape so that the bottom of the strip intersects the corner at a 45-degree angle. Insert a pin into the fold of the tape so that the pleat does not come undone.

    • 4

Insert the fabric into the sewing machine. Stitch the tape onto the fabric by following the lines created by the pins.

    • 5

Remove each pin as the presser foot moves toward it. When you reach a corner, backstitch with the presser foot to completely secure the pleat.
