How to Sell Remnant Children's Fabric

Whether you are a quilter or sew your children's clothing, toys and curtains, you may find yourself with more children's fabric than you need after completing a sewing project. While some scraps of fabric can be reused in other projects, remnant pieces can be sold to clear up storage space and allow you to recoup some of your hobby's cost. Selling remnant children's fabric takes some time and effort but can be well worth it, particularly if you've got an unusual or vintage print.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the remnant pieces of children's fabric. Make a note of the fabric dimensions, print design, color scheme and information such as the fabric designer if available.

    • 2

Take pictures of the fabric with a digital camera. The fabric should be well lit and free of wrinkles. Iron the fabric if necessary before photographing.

    • 3

Advertise the fabric for sale on local bulletin boards and email lists, including the pictures, yardage and price. Locate email lists for parents as well as email lists for quilters and sewers in your area, and ask the owner for permission to advertise your fabric for sale.

    • 4

Bring your fabric to a local flea market or children's consignment store to sell. Look for flea-market vendors selling fabric and ask if they will sell it for you on consignment.

    • 5

Post your fabric on an online auction or artisan's supply sale site. Include pictures of the fabric, a detailed description and the amount you will charge for postage. Consider listing different pieces of fabric separately if they are large or rare remnants or as a lot if they are small and undistinguished. Do not attempt to sell the fabric anywhere else while your online auctions are open.

Contact local fabric stores, quilting stores and children's clothing and bedding manufacturers and ask if they purchase remnants. Small seamstresses and handcrafters who make one-of-a-kind children's items or toys may be interested in purchasing a batch of remnant fabrics.
