Sewing a Halter Top Dress

Sewing a halter top dress can be done in a variety ways. There are varying necklines that can be used, as well as different fabrics, and there are also a few ways that you can cheat a halter top dress together with very little sewing knowledge necessary. A halter top dress is typically an informal summer dress, and is generally very light in fabric.
  1. Scarf halter top dress

    • A scarf halter top dress makes a dress with an asymmetrical hem, and it requires two large square scarfs. The scarves should be two to three feet wide and long. Lay the scarves face to face, and sew along one of the sides, leaving 4-8 inches at the end that you do not sew. Sew a piece of ribbon to each of the corners on the the end you did not sew. Pick the scarves up by the ribbons and tie them around your neck, letting the rest of the scarves fall. Pull the dress around so that it meets in the back, and mark where the two edges meat. Remove the dress and fold it pretty side in. Sew from your mark away from the corners with ribbons. Turn right side out and wear.

    From ready-made

    • You can sew a halter top to a skirt in order to improvise a halter top dress together. Take the skirt of your choice and cut off the waistband. If the skirt has a zipper, cut the top off below the zipper. Set your sewing machine to it's largest stitch and run a basting stitch around the top of the skirt, being sure not to overlap your stitches when y0ou come back to where you've started. Pull on the bobbin thread to gather the top of the skirt. Work the gathers so they are evenly spread across the top of your skirt, and gather until the top of your skirt has the same circumference as the bottom of your halter top. Turn your skirt inside out. Place the halter top inside the skirt, matching the bottom edge of the halter top with the top edge of the skirt. Pin in place and sew all the way around, attaching the halter top to your skirt. When you're done, turn the whole thing right side out and wear.

    Patternless

    • There are several ways to make a halter top without a pattern. One example of an easy patternless halter top is sometimes called the drawstring halter. Take an old t-shirt and cut the sleeves off at the seam. Draw a line across the top of your t-shirt, just underneath the collar, and cut along this line through both layers. Draw a line across the back of the shirt where the bottom of the sleeves used to be and cut that off of the back of the shirt. Fold the top edge of the front down by about an inch and then sew it in place. Run a ribbon or cord through the the casing, and you have a halter top. You can sew a skirt or the torso portion of another t-shirt to the bottom to make it into a dress.

    Patterned and adding gores

    • Any pattern for a halter top can be edited for a halter top dress by adding a skirt or by simply lengthening the pattern. Because some halter tops tend to fit tightly to the torso, you'll want to add a gathered skirt or add gores to the side. Gores are triangles of fabric that can be cut in a tessellating pattern, minimizing wasted fabric. You'll want two triangle that is long enough to extend from the middle of your stomach to the bottom of the extended pattern. How wide you make the triangle will depend on the pattern and how large your hips are. If you're unsure how to size them, start bigger than you'll think you need, and pin them together. If the triangles are too wide for your tastes, you can trim them back before you sew them together.
