Items Needed
In order to use the flip and stitch technique, it's important that you have multiple pieces of fabric, like from different clothes, to create the quilt or new piece of clothing. You'll need a sewing machine, ironing board, scissors or rotary cutter, ruler and ironing board.
Rectangle Technique
The basic technique involves first cutting out square or rectangular pieces of fabric from different pieces of clothing; these are the fabric blocks that smaller fabric strips are sewn onto. These strips of fabric are sewn into the base or block fabric allowing for a fold to occur along the strip fabric. The initial sewn strip fabric is opened up or "flipped," allowing the proceeding piece of strip fabric to be placed underneath. Both pieces of fabric are then stitched together.
Triangle Technique
The stitch and flip technique can be used to create triangle strips in a slightly different fashion. Squares of fabric are placed at corners of the fabric block. Straight seam lines are drawn through the center of the square and then sewn through the middle. The piece of fabric is then flipped open and ironed to the seams. The other side of the flip is cut out. The inner cut-out part of fabric is then used to create an equally shaped triangle that is sewn in the next corner. The cut-out flip then creates the next shape of exact dimension to each edge of the fabric block.
Crazy Quilt
Crazy quilts are often made using the stitch and flip technique. They contain a variety of colored fabrics, created an embroidered fabric that seems. They use the flip technique, but with pieces of fabric of all sizes. Pieces of different-sized fabric are placed and sewn on top of another, creating an irregular looking quilt.
