Things You'll Need
Instructions
Cut all the pieces of all the drill team uniforms first. Cutting all the pieces at once saves you time once you begin sewing.
Label the pieces of the uniform using a washable fabric marker or by pinning labels to each piece. When sewing multiple pieces of clothing and large sets of uniforms, labeling the pieces eliminates any confusion during the assembly process.
Pin each set together and label them by size or by the name of the wearer as necessary. This will ensure that you sew the correct pieces together as you assemble each uniform.
Install the needle into the machine. The needle you use will be determined by the fabric you are sewing. Heavier fabrics, such as twill, will need a higher gauge blunt needle, while stretchy fabrics, such as Lycra or rayon, will need a lower gauge blunt needle.
Set the thread tension, stitch pattern and stitch length for the machine. These two factors are also dependent upon the type of fabric you are sewing. Delicate fabrics, including cotton, will require a shorter stitch length and tighter tension than heavier fabrics, such as wool.
Place the first two pieces of one uniform underneath the presser foot assembly of your sewing machine and lower the presser foot.
Begin sewing and continue until you have one uniform complete. If you are sewing multiple types of fabric onto the uniforms, then sew all the pieces of the first type of fabric, then change your needle and thread as necessary to finish the uniforms. Relabel each uniform as you stop sewing one type of fabric and put it aside until all the pieces are done.
