How to Sew a Rod Pocket

Curtains are one of the simplest sewing projects you can undertake. Whether you are a novice or advanced sewer, with a few yards of fabric and an inexpensive curtain rod you can quickly change the look of your room by stitching up new curtains. While there are many methods to finish curtains for hanging, a basic rod pocket at the top of the curtain is one of the least time consuming to sew. Learning how to sew a rod pocket is an essential skill when sewing your own curtains.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the top of your curtain one-half inch, folding the side of the curtain that will face into the room towards the outside of the curtain. Pin in place and iron to secure the crease.

    • 2

Sew the hemmed edge in place, using a sewing machine set with a straight stitch and a one-quarter inch seam allowance. Remove any pins and cut any excess thread.

    • 3

Measure around the circumference of your curtain rod. Fold the top of the curtain down again by a measurement equal to the circumference of the curtain rod plus one-quarter inch. Pin in place and iron to crease.

    • 4

Sew a straight stitch along the bottom of this fold. Remove the pins and cut any excess thread.

    • 5

Insert the curtain rod through one end of the rod pocket and pull the fabric over it to hang the curtains.
