How to Make a Fabric Pillowcase

Fabric stores contain a rainbow of cotton fabrics. Cotton is soft, durable and easily washable, which makes it an the ideal choice for sewing pillowcases. Purchase a few yards of fabric, thread your sewing machine, and add a splash of color to your bedding. Choose a solid, plaid or floral pattern for your master bedroom, a whimsical animal print for the kids, or a holiday print to dress up the guest room.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine how large you want the finished pillowcases. Standard pillowcases usually measure 21-by-36 inches.

    • 2

Use scissors or s rotary cutter to cut two pieces of fabric, each measuring 43-by-30 inches.

    • 3

Lay the fabric on a flat surface with the right sides facing each other. Pin around both long sides, and one short side.

    • 4

Thread your sewing machine with thread that matches or coordinates with your fabric. Set the machine to the straight-stitch setting, and sew the three pinned sides closed. Leave a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

    • 5

Remove the pins. Turn the pillowcase right-side out and press it with a warm iron.

    • 6

Fold the raw edges in about 1/2-inch. Press with a warm iron.

    • 7

Fold the edges in again, about 4 inches. This hides the raw edge inside the fold. Press again and pin all the way around the edges.

    • 8

Sew around the open end. Leave a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Remove all the pins.
