How to Sew a Newborn's Dress

Sewing a newborn dress is a way to personalize, coordinate and tailor a baby girl's wardrobe. Use purchased patterns or patterns you create yourself to create unique and flattering newborn dresses. When sewing for a newborn, avoid patterns that use elastic that can get wrapped and pulled around a baby's limbs, causing discomfort or cutting off circulation. Newborn dress pattern
1/2 - one yard fabric
Straight sewing pins
Scissors
Sewing machine
Coordinating thread
Embellishments

  Read the pattern instructions, if you are using a purchased pattern. Note any alterations or special layout requirements.

  Lay out the fabric on a table. Fabric should be folded with selvage -- or finished --- edges together. Pin the pattern pieces to the fabric using straight sewing pins. Cut out the pieces.

  Stitch the pieces according to the pattern directions. If you are creating your own pattern, then complete the dress in the following steps: First, sew shoulder seams together. Second, sew side seams. Third, add any collars or neckline embellishments. Fourth, add sleeves. Fifth, hem the dress.

  After stitching the dress together, add any embellishments like ribbons, buttons, appliques or embroidery.
