Sewing canvas isn't always about making some simple adjustments to a dull, heavy material to fit on a sailboat mast. Canvas is a durable textile that can be great for accessories and takes patterns and colors well. Even if you are sewing canvas for the boat, you can make your canvas boating accessories attractive and stylish or use canvas to craft trendy bags and other accessories.

Canvas and Boating
- Canvas on a ship or boat can also be an art, and if you are a boater with some tailoring skills then you can make intricate designs with your canvas. This isn't just about embellishing the sails but also other canvas accessories that make up your boating gear, although that's a possibility for more advanced sewers. Other examples include a traditional "ditty bag" or sea bag, usually used for the simple task of on-deck storage. But you can sew the bag with a more trendy design and accentuate it with the decorative or functional rope of your choice. Like the sailors of old, you can also use your ditty bag as a suitcase or beach bag, but swap the tobacco and tools of the privateer for suntan lotion and a pair of sandals.

All it takes is a single large canvas sheet to make a simple lean-to type of shelter with a rope and two trees, but you can also make larger tents that would require extra materials for windows and doorways.

  Canvas is a thick, durable, water-resistant material commonly used to make storage containers. This includes larger containers for stationary storage but canvas has always been a popular fabric for larger handbags, especially ones that are used near water. Their durability makes them ideal for school tote bags, shopping bags or sports bags.
