How to Make a Felt Case

Felt, a durable and easy to work with fabric made of matted wool or wool-synthetic blend, makes a great and inexpensive fabric choice for a simple case. Felt's thickness provides padding for electronics, glasses or fragile items and can be found in a wide range of colors. Sewing a basic felt case is a simple afternoon project, whether you are making a case for your tablet computer, smart phone or almost any item you can measure.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the object for which you are making a case. Measure for the object's length and width when viewed from the front as well as the object's height. For example, if you are measuring a smart phone, measure the length and width of the phone's face, and then measure the distance from the front of the phone to the back of the phone.

    • 2

Measure two pieces of felt. The length of the felt should be equal to the length of the object plus a 1/2-inch seam allowance. The width of the felt should be equal to the width of the object plus the object's "height," or the distance from the front to the back of the object, and a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 3

Pin the pieces of felt together, right sides facing, along three of the four sides. Leave either a short side or long side of the felt open, depending on how you want to slide your object into the case.

    • 4

Sew a straight stitch along the three pinned edges of the felt, leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance, using either a sewing machine or needle and thread. Backstitch at each end to secure your stitches.

    • 5

Turn the felt case inside out. Slide your phone, book or other object into it through the open side.
