How to Make a Point Presser for Sewing

A point presser is a tool used to press hard-to-reach seams, such as collars, cuffs, sleeve and shoulder seams when sewing a garment. It is a mini ironing board made of wood mounted on a flat board. The fabric is laid across the point presser and the seams are then pressed flat with an iron. The flat board to which the presser is mounted is also often used to keep seams flat without applying heat. Steam the fabric and then press flat with the bottom of the point presser to avoid scorching delicate fabrics. Pressing seams while sewing garments gives the garment a professional finished look.

Instructions

Cut the board so it measures 12 inches by 6 inches. Use a jigsaw to cut out a section of both sides of the the 6-inch side of the board. The cutout will be of different sizes on each side. Begin at the top of the board cutting inward approximately 5 inches while gradually sloping downward, then begin tapering your cut to the bottom edge of the board. Cut the opposite side beginning 1 inch from the top of the board but only extending inward 1 inch and taper down to the bottom edge of the board. After the cuts have been made, the side opposite of the 12 inch length will be approximately 5 inches in width. The board will now resemble the shape of an anvil.

Sand the cuts of the board with sandpaper to create a smooth surface.

Cut another length of board 12 inches by 6 inches for the base. Attach the anvil-shaped board to the base. Place the edge of the 5-inch length side of the board in the center of the base. Use wood glue and nails to firmly attach the two pieces. Be certain that the nails are flush against the wood to not snag the fabric when using the point presser.
