Sewing a Serger Cover

A serger attracts attention and dust. Keep curious fingers and damaging particles away from your delicate machine. Use your serger to sew a decorative cover that will keep your machine clean and out of sight. It will help you avoid the hassle of rethreading the machine and readjusting the settings. Choose a heavyweight fabric, such as upholstery fabric or prequilted cotton, to help the cover hang properly. Choose a tightly woven fabric to keep your machine dust-free.

Instructions

    • 1

Lower the thread rods and measure the height, width and length of your serger. Add two inches to all dimensions, for seam allowances and ease.

    • 2

Cut the cover pieces from heavy fabric with a tight weave. Cut one rectangle for the top of the cover using the length and width measurements. Cut two rectangles using the width and height measurements for the sides and two using the length and height measurements for the front and back.

    • 3

Place the back piece on a table, right-side up, with the height measurements on the sides. Lay a side piece on top, right-side down, with the height measurements on the sides. Align the right sides and pin them together.

    • 4

Unfold the fabric by lifting the left edge of the side piece to the right. Place the front piece on top of it, right-side down. Pin the front to the top in the same way you pinned the side to the back. Unfold the front piece by lifting it to the right. Pin the remaining side on in the same way. You will have made a long strip of pieces.

    • 5

Fold the right side of the strip to meet the left side of the strip. Pin these sides together to make a ring or tube of fabric.

    • 6

Set the serger to sew a four thread overcast stitch with the cutting blade up. Remove the pins from each seam and serge it together. Keep the edges even with the 1/2-inch guide line on the machine. Sew all four seams.

    • 7

Pin the top fabric piece onto the ring matching the sides that correspond to the length and the sides that correspond to the width. Be sure the right sides of the fabric are together.

    • 8

Remove the pins from one edge and serge it as you did the side seams. Serge the remaining three seams, one at a time, in the same way. Trim all dangling threads and turn the cover right side out.

    • 9

Thread the serger's lower loopers with woolly nylon and set the machine to sew a finishing stitch with a short stitch length. Sew around the bottom of the cover, keeping the the edge of the fabric on the 5/8-inch guideline. This will give the cover a decorative hem.
