How to Apply Iron on Interfacing

Interfacing makes one type of fabric behave like a different type of fabric. It can make shirt fabric stiff enough to make collars and cuffs. Use it to make stretchy t-shirts into a stable fabric for a quilt. Iron on interfacing allows you to stiffen the actual fabric. Sewn in interfacing simply adds a stiff layer under the fabric. If your fabric pieces are large or stretchy, you must use iron-on interfacing to ensure the center of the fabric is stabilized.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the interfacing using the the same pattern used for cutting the fabric, unless the pattern directs you differently. Fold the interfacing the same way you folded the fabric for cutting.

    • 2

Match the interfacing with the corresponding fabric piece, placing the adhesive side of the interfacing against the wrong side of the fabric.

    • 3

Trim the seam allowance on the interfacing to 1/8 inch. This reduces the bulk in the seam. If your pattern calls for 5/8 inch seam allowances trim 1/2 inch from all edges of the interfacing. For a 1/2 inch seam allowance trim off 3/8 inch.

    • 4

Place the fabric wrong side up on an ironing board and center the interfacing, adhesive side down, on top of it. Pin the interfacing in place.

    • 5

Set the iron on the lowest steam setting. Run the tip of the iron around the edges to "baste" the interfacing in place. Remove the pins as you baste.

    • 6

Wet a press cloth and wring it out. Lay the wet cloth over the interfacing. Press the stack of fabric for 10 seconds without moving the iron. The press cloth under the iron should be dry when you lift the iron. If it is still damp, use a higher heat setting.

    • 7

Wet and wring the cloth again and use it to press each section of the interfacing in the same way. Check for loose sections of interfacing and iron them again with a wet cloth.
