Instructions
Determine the shape and dimensions for your scarf with the tape measure, typically a rectangle or square. A long, silk rectangular scarf, for example, can double as a shawl. Record the measurement.
Select the fabric and fringe. Plaid-patterned wool, felt and silk are good choices. Fabric store personnel can make recommendations.
Lay the fabric on the surface and cut to the measurement.
Select a machine-stitch to finish all edges. A zigzag stitch is a good choice. Use a wide stitch for fabrics that are likely to fray less or use a closer stitch for fabrics that might easily fray.
Cut the fringe to the desired length. If you want the fringe to trim all the edges, cut the fringe length to the scarf dimensions. This option works well with a rectangular or square scarf. Another option is to trim two edges opposite each other which looks best with a rectangular-shaped scarf; however, you may choose the option that best suits you.
Secure the fringe 1/16 inch from the edges of the scarf with the pins. Top-stitch the fringe to the scarf. Remove the pins.
