T-shirt Cap
Trace a newborn cap pattern onto a clean T-shirt. You can download online templates or draw the pattern freehand by making a shape that resembles a gnome̵7;s hat. Start at the lower edges of an 8½-by-11 piece of paper and draw up to a point approximately ½ inch from the top of the paper. Make your point at the top rounded.
Pin the pattern to the lower hemmed edge of the T-shirt. Cut through both the top and bottom of the T-shirt to make two pieces.
Place the cut out T-shirt pieces right sides together and pin around the two side edges. Leave the hemmed bottom edges open.
Use a zigzag stitch to sew from one bottom edge of the cap up and around the point and down to the bottom edge on the other side. The hem of the t-shirt will also serve as the hem of the cap. Back stitch at each end.
Make small cuts around the top point of the hat to prevent it from bunching up. Turn the hat right side out.
Make a knot in the material at the point of the hat.
Knitted Cap
Loosely cast on 60 stitches. Leave approximately 8 inches of yarn for a tail, which will be used in a later step.
Knit 1 and purl 1 across for the first 10 rows. For row 11, knit across; for row 12, purl across. Repeat rows 11 and 12 six more times to complete a total of 24 rows.
Knit 4, then knit 2 together across row 25. Purl across for row 26. Knit 3, knit 2 together for row 27. Purl across row 28. Knit 2, knit 2 together for row 29. Purl across row 30. Knit 1, knit 2 together for row 31. Purl across row 32. Complete row 33 by knitting 2 together.
Cut the yarn, leaving approximately 8 inches for a tail. Use the yarn needle to draw the yarn tail through the stitches remaining on the needle. Pull the yarn snugly and secure.
Place the right sides of the hat together and sew the edges together with the 8 inch tail left when you cast on. Weave the remains of the end tails into the seam to secure them and to keep the hat from unraveling.
