How to Make a Yarn Wig for a Waldorf Doll

A Waldorf doll is a handmade doll made in the tradition of the Waldorf style. Popularized because of its use in Waldorf education, the Waldorf style of doll uses natural materials such as wool and cotton and includes simple facial features. Sew a Waldorf doll for yourself or a child you love and use traditional wool yarn or easy-care acrylic to make the wig, adding the finishing touches to her personality.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a book that is approximately the same height as what you want for the doll's hair. Wrap the yarn around the book several times, lining up the strands side by side as you wrap and covering the entire front of the book.

    • 2

Use scissors to cut the yarn across the top of the book to make it into long strands instead of loops.

    • 3

Carefully remove the yarn from the book, keeping the strands lined up. Position the hair so it is centered on the top of the doll's head and use straight pins to hold it in place.

    • 4

Thread a doll-making needle with thread in a color that coordinates with your doll's hair. Start at the center front of the head and sew a straight line of stitching down the center of the head toward the back to secure the hair in place.

    • 5

Make another line of stitching that goes around the sides and back of the doll's head, approximately just above ear level. Brush the doll's hair down and toward the back as you do this to fully cover her head.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 1 through 4 once or twice more until the doll has a full head of hair. Omit Step 5 on the second and third layers so her hair will hang down naturally.
