How to Add Satin Ribbon as a Border on a Quilt

Adding a satin border to a quilt will give it a touch of class and elegance. Pick out your favorite color, one that complements your quilt or happens to be the favorite color of the recipient. The border, also known as a binding, will also keep your quilt from fraying, allowing it to be treasured for years to come. With a binding, the quilt can be used or hung up for decoration.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the sides of your quilt, cutting ribbon the same length as the sides of the quilt with 4 inches extra.

    • 2

Place the satin ribbon on top of the edge of the quilt. Put it down so the edge of the quilt is covering half the width of the ribbon. Leave a few inches on the top and bottom. Pin in place on one side.

    • 3

Turn the quilt over and fold the ribbon over the side of the quilt. Use an iron on a low, cotton setting and iron a crease in the ribbon. Pin in place.

    • 4

Use a simple running stitch, either by hand or with a sewing machine, to attach the ribbon to the quilt.

    • 5

Repeat the process on the remaining three sides.

    • 6

Cut a slit down the remainder of the ribbons at the corners where the ribbon is folded. Cut the remainder inward diagonally so that your ribbon ends form a square on each corner. Secure with a simple running stitch.
