How to Get a Bobbin to Catch on a Brother Sewing Machine

One of the most essential tasks you can master when sewing on a Brother sewing machine is getting your bobbin thread properly "caught" onto the top thread. If you fail to complete this task properly, the thread will knot up inside the bobbin compartment. The top thread thread will also unravel as you sew on to your fabric and the stitches will not hold when the bobbin thread is not caught. It is important to get the bobbin thread caught before you actually start sewing to prevent you from losing all of your work.

Instructions

    • 1

Wind the bobbin according to the instructions for your specific Brother machine model, these instructions will differ slightly for each model. Position the bobbin inside the bobbin case.

    • 2

Pull up on the tab on top of the bobbin case and insert the the bobbin with the case into the bobbin compartment on your Brother sewing machine. Thread your top thread and insert the tip through the front eye of the needle so the thread is trailing toward the back side of the machine.

    • 3

Hold the tip of the top thread between your left thumb and forefinger. Simultaneously turn the hand wheel toward you with your right hand until the needle goes down into the needle plate. The hand wheel is on the right side of your machine.

    • 4

Continue turning the hand wheel until the needle rises up from the needle plate. The needle will bring up a loop of the bobbin thread.

    • 5

Turn the hand wheel until the needle rests at its highest position. Slide the blades of a pair of scissors underneath the presser foot, moving from the right side of the presser foot to the left side. This action pulls the loop out, which leaves a single thread.
