Things You'll Need
Instructions
Measure the garment where you want to place the ribbon. Cut the ribbon to this measurement, allowing two inches extra to allow for overlapping.
Pin the ribbon to the garment. Place a pin every inch along the ribbon length to hold it securely in place. Use plenty of pins, as silky ribbon needs more pins than ordinary fabric to hold it in place.Thread your sewing needle, and tie a knot in the end of the thread.
Bring needle up through the underside of the fabric and through the very edge of the ribbon. Push the needle back down through the fabric, level with the stitch in the ribbon, to make a tiny stitch over the edge of the ribbon.
Bring the needle back up through the fabric, one-quarter inch away from the first stitch, again catching the very edge of the ribbon. Push the needle back down through the fabric, level with where the stitch goes through the ribbon, to make a second tiny stitch.
Continue to stitch along one edge of the ribbon, making tiny stitches one-quarter inch apart, until you reach the end. Remove the pins as you come to them. Stop stitching one-half inch from the end of ribbon. Overlap the start and end of the ribbon by one inch, cutting off any excess ribbon. Turn the end of the ribbon under by one-half inch to make a hem, then stitch through the two layers of ribbon to the end. Stitch the overlapping short ends of the ribbon using the same slip stitch as you used around the length of the ribbon. Make a couple of stitches in the same place to secure the thread, then knot and cut the thread.
Stitch around the other side of the ribbon in the same way.
