How to Make Newborn's Hat With Bow

Take a break from pink. Let everyone know your precious infant is a girl by dressing her in a hat with a bow. Make the hat from soft, stretchy cotton rib knit and your baby will hardly notice she has it on -- she'll just know she's cradled in warmth. Give the hat a satin ribbon bow in a color that draws attention to her lovely eyes.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2-Yard cotton rib knit fabric
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • 1/2-Inch satin ribbon, 1/8 yard
  • Needle

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 9-by-16-inch rectangle of cotton rib knit fabric. The ribs should run parallel to the 9-inch side.

    • 2

Fold the rectangle in half by bringing the 16-inch sides together. This fold is the bottom edge of the hat.

    • 3

Lay the folded fabric on a table with the fold closest to you. Fold the fabric in half again by bringing the left side to meet the right side.

    • 4

Set the machine to sew a medium zigzag stitch. Sew along the right side of the folded rectangle one-quarter inch from the edge.

    • 5

Sew along the top of the hat. Don't stretch the hat as you sew. This will give the hat a rounded shape because the bottom edge will stretch more than the top.

    • 6

      Turn the hat right-side-out.

    • 7

Make a 3-inch-wide bow of one-half-inch satin ribbon. Cut the ends of the ribbon at an angle to prevent fraying. Hand-sew the bow to the center of the hat one-half inch above the bottom edge.
