Instructions

    • 1

Arrange several ties on a cutting mat side by side. Line them up so they all face the same direction and the bottom points are all directly next to one another.

    • 2

Locate a point at which most of the ties seem to begin to taper and their sides no longer touch. Line up a ruler or straight edge at this point, going horizontally across the ties as a group.

    • 3

Use a rotary cutter to cut off the tapered ends of the ties, lined up with the ruler or straight edge. Discard the narrow ends.

    • 4

Hold two ties together with their right sides facing one another. Use straight pins to attach them together. Sew a straight seam down one long side, then go back over the edge of the seam with a zigzag stitch to stabilize it. Remove the pins.

    • 5

Repeat the process in Step 4 to attach the rest of the ties in a row. This will create a piece of "fabric" made of ties.

    • 6

Cut a second piece of fabric to match the general dimensions of the tie fabric, adding an extra 1/2 inch to each side of the lining fabric.

    • 7

Fold in all the edges of the lining fabric by 1/2 inch toward the wrong side, then pin the lining fabric to the top of the tie "fabric" with the right sides facing one another. Pin all the way around the four sides.

    • 8

Sew a straight seam around the perimeter of the tie and lining fabrics, positioning your seam 1/4 inch in from the outside edges. Leave an opening 4 inches long on one side for turning. Remove the pins.

    • 9

Turn the bag right-side-out through the opening you left, then sew that seam closed with a hand-sewing needle and thread. Keep your stitches small so they remain hidden.

    • 10

Arrange the purse so that it sits on the table with the tie fabric facing up and the dimensions are tall instead of wide. Fold up the bottom edge of the purse by one-third, leaving the top one-third of the purse open and unfolded. Pin along the two sides of the fold.

    • 11

Sew a straight seam along each folded side of the purse, going back over it again with a zigzag stitch. Turn the purse right-side-out so it resembles a clutch or envelope shape.

    • 12

Use a hand-sewing needle and matching thread to sew a snap to the center of the purse flap on the inside, then line up the matching half of the snap to the purse front and sew it in place so the clutch will remain closed.
