How to Iron for Quilting

Quilting is a lot of work, and the process of starching and ironing the quilting fabric beforehand to ensure it is ready to go is no exception. You will face a number of difficult obstacles, as regular ironing boards won't work and wet starch increases the risk of singing the fabric. With the right techniques, however, you can speed up the ironing process without damaging your fabrics.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the fabric on a firm, heat-proof surface, such as a counter top or a cutting board. A regular ironing board is too soft and will not allow you to properly bond the starch with the fabric.

    • 2

Clip loose threads from the edges of the fabric.

    • 3

Spray starch on the front of the fabric and then flip it over.

    • 4

Heat up a dry iron and press from the back of the fabric to bond the starch with the fibers.

    • 5

Allow the fabric to cool before picking it up.
