How to Make Nursery Accessories Using Old Blue Jeans

Denim is a gender-neutral fabric ̵2; perfect for spicing up the decor in a nursery for a baby boy or girl. Grab old jeans from the back of your closet and use simple patchwork techniques to make a variety of items for your baby's new room. Pair the denim with red for boys or pink for girls to make a nursery full of items that will still be stylish as your baby gets older.

Cut your jeans (of varying colors) into squares, using a scissors. Get several different squares ̵2; some lighter, some darker ̵2; and sew the pieces together into a patchwork quilt using a sewing machine and thread. Alternate a square of denim with a square of red or pink flannel and sew them together in strips. Sew the strips together into a blanket; then, put the blanket together with a larger piece of flannel with the right sides facing together. Pin all the way around and sew around the edges, leaving a small hole. Turn the quilt right side out through the hole; stitch the hole closed; then, stitch around the top perimeter to give it a finished look and to keep the quilt top and back from slipping around after washing. The baby's quilt does not need batting for warmth because the denim and flannel are already warm enough.

Use the jeans to make throw pillows to adorn your rocking chair and coordinate with the baby's bed. Cut off the leg from one pair of jeans; then, turn it inside out. Use the sewing machine to sew one cut end closed; then, turn the jeans right side out again. Fill with pillow stuffing and fold under the edges on the open end and sew the edges closed as well. You can make your pillow as long or as short as you like; for a larger version, open up the leg on one long side to make a wider piece of denim fabric; put it together with another opened-up leg ̵2; right sides facing together ̵2; and sew around three edges; then, turn right side out through the fourth side, stuff and sew the opening closed.

Use a lightweight pair of jeans to make a curtain valance. Cut off the front half of one leg. Fold in the short edges by 1/4 inch, then 1/4 inch again and sew. Fold under one long edge the same way, then fold the other long edge by 1/4 inch and then 1 inch. Slide the curtain rod in the pocket made in the top edge. Repeat with another leg if the nursery has two windows.

Make an organizer out of the denim pockets. Use a pair of scissors to remove the pockets from several pairs of jeans. Sew them onto a larger piece of cotton fabric; then, back the cotton with more flannel or cotton to stabilize it. Hang this on the wall near the changing table and use the pockets to hold small items, such as cotton swabs and diaper rash creams.
