Sewing a Necklace Onto Your Tank Top

Embellishing that old tank top will give it a new life and add interest to the otherwise boring and plain look it has now. Adding embellishments, such as a necklace, is much less intimidating than making new clothes and lot less expensive than buying an already decorated tank top. Your tank top will also be personalized and customized for the look you want.

Things You'll Need

  • Hand-sewing needle
  • Matching thread
  • Pins or fabric marker

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the tank top out flat on your work surface with the front of the shirt on top.

    • 2

Place the necklace on top of the tank top and experiment with different positions to determine where it will look the best and how low you want the necklace to hang.

    • 3

Measure down from the seam in the middle of the shoulder of the tank top. This is the seam that connects the front of the tank top to the back.

    • 4

Mark the measurement with a pin or by making a mark with a fabric marker.

    • 5

Measure the same distance down from the shoulder seam and mark the position on the other side of the tank top. This will ensure that your necklace hangs evenly and you do not inadvertently sew it on in uneven lengths.

    • 6

Thread the sewing needle with your matching thread. Tie the two ends of the thread together so that they do not come loose from the needle or pull through the fabric.

    • 7

Insert the needle through one of your marks, coming up from the inside of the tank top.
Only penetrate the front of the tank top and not both sides. Do not pull the needle all the way through yet.

    • 8

Place the necklace onto the needle, allowing the needle to go through part of the chain of the necklace. If there is no chain link to go through, insert the needle through the jump rings that hold the clasp in place.

    • 9

Pull the needle through completely and pull until the thread is taut.

    • 10

Insert the needle back down through the front of the tank top on the outside of the chain, essentially catching the chain and securing it to the tank top. This is one stitch.

    • 11

Bring the needle back up through the hole in the chain and then insert it down into the tank top on the opposite side of the chain from the last stitch you made.

    • 12

Repeat the stitches, one on each side of the chain two more times to secure the necklace in place. Tie the thread on the back of the tank top and trim the thread.

    • 13

Stitch the other side of the necklace in the same manner to hold it to the other side of the tank top. Add additional stitches around the length of the necklace to limit its movement as you wear the tank top.

    • 14

Remove the clasp and any additional length of chain that is above the stitching on the shoulder areas. Depending on how you chose to have the necklace hang, there may be no chain to remove.
