How to Line Up Squares When Sewing

Line up squares as you go to avoid creating imperfections you cannot disguise or fix. The process of lining up squares is called squaring, and it is extremely important when making quilts. If the squares are not lined up correctly, then the quilt will turn out uneven, and this will cause rippling or wrinkles that require starting over.

Trim the squares so they do not have any rough edges or varied side measurements. All sides should have exactly the same measurements. If one side of one square is 12 inches, then the remaining three sides of the square and all four sides of the second square must also be 12 inches. Use a square ruler if you need assistance in making sure the edges are cut evenly and that all sides are the same length.

    • 2

Iron any seams on the backside of the square so they are open and lie flat. This is especially important for square quilt blocks. If the seams being open would alter the look of the quilt, then iron them so one seam is ironed to the left and the next seam is flat toward the right. This will enable you to butt the seams up against each other, so they do not interfere with lining up the edges.

    • 3

Place the first square flat on the surface in front of you with the right side of the cloth facing up. The right side of the fabric is the side that shows on your finished project.

    • 4

Place the next square on top of the first one with the right side facing down.

    • 5

Stand up so you can get an unrestricted view of the top of the two squares. Lean over the work surface as necessary to make sure you are not viewing the squares at an angle.

    • 6

Start at the center of any side and line up the edge of the fabrics. Use your fingers to smooth the fabric out toward the edges, being careful not to stretch the fabrics. Line up all four sides in the same fashion, as needed, until all sides are even.

    • 7

Pin the squares together to prevent any shifting of the fabrics as you move the squares to the sewing machine, and as they are pulled under the needle. Make sure to remove the pins before they come into contact with the needle to avoid damage to the machine or yourself.
