How to Make a Red Felt Fez

Whether it's for Halloween or any time of the year that you just feel like putting on a costume, sew yourself a red felt Fez in no time flat. One of the benefits of felt fabric is that it won't fray, so it eliminates some of the work required in traditional sewing. As an added bonus, when you sew your own costume, you can customize it to your preferred sizing needs.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Red felt fabric
  • Ruler (optional)
  • Pen
  • Compass
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine or sewing needle
  • Thread

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap a tape measure around your head, crossing over your forehead and going around your head just above your ears. Call this measurement "A."

    • 2

Measure a rectangle of red felt fabric that is 8 inches high by A plus 1/2 inch wide; mark this with a pen, using a ruler or your tape measure to measure it out.

    • 3

Measure and mark a circle out of felt with a circumference of A. Use a compass to help you draw the circle.

    • 4

Cut out the felt pieces with scissors.

    • 5

Bring the 8-inch edges of the rectangle together and sew a straight seam along this edge, 1/4 inch in from the edge. Flatten the seams to open them.

    • 6

Pin the circle in place along one top edge of the cylinder that you created in Step 5. Sew a straight seam all around the circle, making sure this seam shows on the same side as the first seam you made.

    • 7

Remove the pins and turn the fez right side out to wear it.
