How to Make Pillows from a Tapestry

Tapestries are pieces of cloth where the design has been woven in rather than dyed in. Tapestries were originally intended to provide warmth in castles and for royalty that could afford the expense of the intricate weaving process. Designs on tapestry fabrics are very intricate and detailed, providing a touch of class and elegance to any room. Each piece is a work of art that can be recycled into seat cushions or pillows. The fabric is dense and heavy and requires special needles when sewing to avoid damaging the fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces from the tapestry that are the same size as the pillow form. This will be the front and back of the pillow.

    • 2

Install a tapestry needle in your sewing machine. Tapestry needles are blunt-tipped and have a larger eye than regular sewing needles. This is necessary to sew the fabric together without ripping or picking any of the threads.

    • 3

Sew around the outer edges of each piece of the fabric using a zigzag stitch. This will prevent the threads in the fabric from unraveling.

    • 4

Lay the pillow top face up on your work surface. You should be able to clearly see the design you want showing on the outside of the pillow.

    • 5

Lay the back piece of the pillow on top of the front, with the design you want on the outside facing down. Line up the edges and the corners of the two pieces.

    • 6

Pin the two layers of fabric together. This will keep the pieces from slipping or moving while you are sewing them together.

    • 7

Sew around the edges of the pillow, leaving an opening large enough to turn the cover right-side-out and to stuff the pillow form inside. The size of the opening will depend on the pillow form density and size. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam to provide added stability.

    • 8

Turn the tapestry cover right-side-out and stuff the pillow form inside. Work the form inside until the corners of the form are pushed all the way into the corners of the tapestry cover.

    • 9

Hand stitch the opening closed, turning under the same 1/2-inch seam allowance that you sewed with the machine. The pillow cover will be tight on the pillow form. When hand stitching, it is necessary to use a tapestry needle just as when machine sewing.
