How to Sew Velcro to Felt

Felt, a thick and strong fabric made from matted wool or a synthetic-wool blend, is an ideal choice for sewing children's toys, play food, quiet books or bags. Because felt is an easy to work with and inexpensive fabric available in many colors, it can be used for almost anything. Children's toys and play food often use Velcro to allow children to detach and reattach pieces or open and shut pockets. Sew Velcro to felt easily with a few basic sewing procedures.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a size and type of Velcro. Velcro is available in strips with various widths or in pre-cut circle or square pieces, and is usually either black or white. To attach small pieces of felt to each other, choose small pre-cut circles or squares. Strips of Velcro are preferable for larger felt pieces.

    • 2

Measure and cut the Velcro to the desired length, if using strips.

    • 3

Separate the hooked side of the Velcro piece from the looped side.

    • 4

Pin the hooked piece of Velcro onto the felt. Pin the looped side on to the other felt piece. Attach the Velcro pieces together to make sure both pieces are in the correct spot. Adjust if necessary.

    • 5

Sew around the perimeter of each Velcro piece using a straight stitch in a thread color that matches the felt. Set your sewing machine to a short or medium stitch length and select a straight stitch with the machine's stitch selection dial. Sew along one side of the Velcro with a 1/8 inch seam allowance. Turn the Velcro and felt when you are 1/8 of an inch away from the edge of the Velcro and sew along the next side. Continue until all four sides are sewn in place. If sewing by hand, stitch in an even line along one edge of the Velcro, holding the felt taut as you sew. Turn the Velcro and felt when you reach the end and continue to stitch along the perimeter until the Velcro is completely attached.

Remove the pins as you sew and trim the excess thread once the Velcro is completely attached to the felt.
