Good Ways to Organize Your Sewing Box

A disorganized sewing box can be overwhelming and waste your time. When organizing your sewing box, each type of item should have its own place so you can find it when you need it. Keep safety in mind as well, since some sewing items can injure you if left loose in the box.
  1. Important Tools

    • Important tools, including your scissors and measuring tape, should be placed in the top of the box where they are easy to remove. If you are currently working on a project, store the tools, pieces of the project and the pattern in the top of the box.

    Thread

    • Organize your thread spools according to color and use. Keep embroidery threads separated from sewing threads. Arrange the thread in rows so the colors are easy to see. If your sewing box has posts for storing thread, place only one spool on each post.

    Needles and Pins

    • Sharp objects should never be placed loosely into the sewing box. Place them in small containers or leave them in their original packaging. Use a pincushion to make pins easier to store in the box. Thread the small hole at the ends of safety pins onto the pin portion of another safety pin. Close the pin to keep them all together and in one place.

    Other Supplies

    • Use the bottom of your sewing box to put things you don̵7;t use often. Place elastic, ribbons and buttons on the bottom of the box. Keep each type of object in its own place, using pins or rubber bands to hold ribbons together so they can be stored compactly. Place small elements, such as clasps or snaps, in small containers with labels to keep them from getting lost in the bottom of the box. An ice cube tray also makes an easy option for storing small clasps and notions.
