How to Sew Door Curtains

Turn a dull, lifeless room into a stunning and elegant showpiece by adding door curtains. Curtains give a designer look to French doors and privacy to large open doorways with glass panels. In winter, curtains help keep out drafts. In the summer, they can block out light and help to keep the room cool. The curtains can be made from any fabric you like, giving you full control over the final look of your room.

Instructions

    • 1

Launder your fabric according to the instructions on the bolt. This removes any excess dye and will preshrink the fabric.

    • 2

Measure the diameter of your curtain rod. Add one-quarter inch for slack so that the curtain will not be difficult to place over the bar. Write the measurement down and label it rod diameter. Multiply this number by two.

    • 3

Measure the length and width of the doorway where the curtains will hang. Start at the floor and measure up to where you want the curtain rod to be.

    • 4

Multiply the width of the fabric by 1.5. This will provide enough extra fabric to make a wavy curtain. Now divide that number by 2 to find the width of each panel so you can make two curtains for the door.

    • 5

Add one inch to the length and one inch to the width of each panel to accommodate for the seam allowance. This will be the final width measurement.

    • 6

Add the amount figured in Step 2 to the length measurement. This is the final length for the fabric.

    • 7

Cut the two panels to the final length and width you have calculated. It may be necessary to iron the fabric first to remove any wrinkles. Wrinkles in the fabric will cause inaccurate cutting and may result in sloppy looking curtains.

    • 8

Hem the length on both sides of each panel, maintaining a one-half-inch seam allowance.

    • 9

Turn under one-half inch along the top edge of one panel. Iron the fold to hold it in place. The fold must be made towards the wrong side of the fabric, or the side that will be against the door.

    • 10

Turn under the rod diameter along the top edge.

    • 11

Stitch across the fabric to hold the fold in place. Stitch through the folded seam allowance. This will complete the rod pocket.

    • 12

Turn up a one-half seam allowance on the bottom edge of each curtain panel and stitch in place. Your curtains are now ready to hang.
