How to Make a Little Boy's Tie From an Adult Tie

Whether you want to save money on a child's tie or match your little boy's tie to his father's, turning a men's tie into a little boy's tie is a simple sewing project. Use an inexpensive thrift shop or sale tie to make a frugal boy's tie, or buy two adult ties to turn one into a matching boy's tie. This project is also an environmentally friendly way to recycle old and unworn men's ties, resulting in an easy-to-wear tie for your small boy.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut a piece of 1/2-inch-wide elastic to fit the child's collar size. Set the elastic aside.

    • 2

Measure the distance from the boy's collar to where you would like the end of the tie to hit. Turn over a men's necktie and cut a piece to match this measurement from the wide end of the tie. Remove any labels, tags or stitching from the inside of the tie.

    • 3

Lay the narrow end of the tie over the cut piece and trim it so that the narrow inside strip of the tie is the desired length, usually an inch shorter than the front piece.

    • 4

Measure and cut one more piece of the tie that is half the length of the wide piece. This piece will be used to make the boy's tie knot.

    • 5

Turn the knot piece over and fold one-third of the material in at a slight upward angle. Fold another third from the other side in at a slight upward angle, and iron both folds flat. Tuck the excess fabric into the fold and press it flat. Set it aside.

    • 6

Place the wide piece of tie face down and open it up. Refold one side of the tie to make the tie the desired width for your child, and iron the fold in place. Repeat this procedure with the other side and cut off the excess fabric, so that one side of the inside material just overlaps with the other side. Stitch the two folded pieces together to secure them.

    • 7

Match the outside, wider piece of tie to the inside piece of tie, with the front side of each piece facing down. Sew the pieces together at the top using a straight stitch. Hold the top piece up and curve it into an "S" shape. Stitch a piece of thread through the "S" to create a dimpled appearance at the top of the tie.

    • 8

Open the knot piece and place it over the dimpled top of the tie. Stitch the knot piece to the top of the tie. Refold and close the knot piece over the top of the tie to resemble a tied knot. Stitch it in place at the back to secure it.

    • 9

Sew each end of the elastic to one side of the back of the knot piece of the tie. Trim all excess threads.
