How to Make Crib Bedding for a Doll for Beginner Sewers

Pillow

  Cut two 6-by-9-inch rectangles from from fabric.

  Lay one rectangle on a flat surface with the right side up. Lay the other rectangle on top with right side down and all edges aligned. Pin the rectangles together around the edges.

  Set the sewing machine to sew a straight stitch with a stitch length of 15 stitches per inch. Start sewing 3 inches from the corner on one of the long edges. Lift the pressure foot and place the fabric under the pressure foot with the edge even with the 1/2-inch guideline on the sewing machine bed. Keep the edge aligned with this line so that the seam is 1/2 inch from the edge. This gives you a 1/2-inch seam allowance beyond the seam.

  Sew three stitches backwards to secure the beginning of the seam. Sew forward until you reach the corner. Stop at the corner with the needle down in the fabric. Lift the pressure foot and turn the fabric to sew the next side. Lower the pressure foot and continue sewing to the next corner. Turn this corner in the same way. Continue sewing in this way until you are 4 inches from the starting point. Sew backwards three stitches to secure the end of the seam.

  Cut off the seam allowance at the corners at a 45-degree angle. Cut close to the seam without cutting the seam. This removes the excess fabric inside the corners of the pillow so the corners will be square.

  Turn the pillow right side out and stuff it with fiberfill. Stuff it until it is as firm as you like. Fold in the seam allowances of the opening and stitch the folded edges together. Stitch 1/8 inch from the edges. Sew backward three stitches at each end of the seam.

Comforter

  Cut two 21-by-14-inch rectangles of fabric and one of quilt batting.

  Lay one rectangle of fabric right side up on a flat surface. Lay the second rectangle on top with the right side down. Lay the quilt batting on top of the fabric. Pin the stack of fabric together around the edges.

  Sew the quilt together around the edges in the same way you made the pillow. Clip the corners of the seam allowance. Trim the seam allowance of the batting to 1/4 inch wide.

  Turn the quilt right side out and sew the opening closed, as you sewed the opening in the pillow closed.

  Lay the quilt on the table within short side closest to you. Make a small pencil mark 4 inches below the top and 4 inches in from the right side. Make three more marks the same distances from the other corners. Make two more marks 6 inches below the top two marks.

  Cut six 5-inch pieces of yarn. Thread one through the eye of a needle with a large eye. Stick the needle through all three layers of the fabric at one of the pencil marks. Make a 1/8 inch stitch and bring the yarn back to the other side. Pull the needle off the yarn. Pull the ends of the yarn until they are even and tie them together in a double knot. Sew and knot the yarn at the other pencil marks in the same way.
