Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance over the top of your head from the base of the bone behind each ear. Add 1 inch to this measurement and write down this number. Measure the distance around the back of your head to the base of your skull from the base of the bone behind each ear and write down this measurement.

    • 2

Cut one 5-inch strip of fabric A to the measurement of the distance over the top of your head. Repeat with fabric B.

    • 3

Fold the strip of fabric A inside-out and lengthwise so you have one long 2 1/2-inch strip of fabric. Pin fabric together and sew a 1/2 inch seam around the long open side. Sew a 1/2 inch seam to close one of the short ends as well. Repeat with fabric B.

    • 4

Attach a safety pin to the sewn end. Use the safety pin to turn the strip right-side out. Unhook the safety pin and shake the fabric to let it out. Fold the raw edges in on the open end and hand sew as much inside the seam as possible so as to hide the stitches. Repeat with fabric B.

    • 5

Safety pin one end of the two right side-out strips of fabric together. Twist the fabric strips around each other and safety pin the other end. Hold as securely as possible, as fabric may untwist.

    • 6

Stick several pins through the twist you have created to secure, then hand stitch the twisted fabric together with small stitches and a few knots at several points along the length. Remove pins. The headband should no longer be able to untwist.

    • 7

Cut a piece of elastic cord to the measurement around the back of your head. Stitch each end of this cord to one end of the twisted length of fabric. Stitch as close to the end as possible and make sure to go through the cord several times so that the connection is secure.

    • 8

Wrap more elastic cord over the place where the fabric and the elastic meet to form two headband ends that will sit by the bone behind your ears. Secure the elastic by stitching through it several times. Try on your headband. The elastic should stretch when you put it on, but it should bounce back into shape when you remove it.
