How to Hand Sew the Last Pillow Seam

Machine stitching a pillow is a time-saving way to add instant style to your home decor. A pillow needs some hand stitching to close the gap after you insert the stuffing. A pillow opening has two folds that align to form a seam. Use a hand-sewing needle and matching thread to slip stitch this gap closed. A slip stitch includes a short stitch running under one fold and a shorter stitch connecting the second fold. With the seam allowances tucked out of view, this pillow creation will form a comfortable and attractive addition to your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Pin the two fabric panels together to close the opening. Insert the pins approximately every one or two inches. The seam allowance should be tucked inside.

    • 2

Thread a needle. Tie a knot at the tail end.

    • 3

Hold the pillow with your left hand so the horizontal opening faces you.

    • 4

Insert the needle and bring it out approximately three stitches to the right of the opening. The knot will be on the back or underside. Your hand stitches will overlap these few machine stitches.

    • 5

Hold the needle pointing left and parallel to the seam. Insert the needle into one fabric fold and pull the needle out approximately 1/4 inch to the left.

    • 6

Insert the needle in the opposite fold and slip the needle under only one or two fabric threads. Bring the needle up.

    • 7

Insert the needle in the first fold, almost opposite to the stitch in the second fold. Bring the needle out approximately 1/4 inch to the left.

    • 8

Continue this line of slip stitches, working from right to left. A line of thread forms under one fold. A series of tiny, almost invisible stitches forms under the opposite fold. Pull the thread gently to close the opening one small section at a time.

    • 9

Knot the thread close to the end of the opening on the left side. Hide this final knot by pulling the needle and thread through the seam. Trim the excess thread.

    • 10

      Remove every straight pin.
