How to Adjust the Stitch Size on a Kenmore Sewing Machine

Not all Kenmore sewing machines, whether old or new, come with the capability of sewing different size stitches. The size of the stitch, sometimes referred to as stitch length, is preset to 4 mm and cannot be changed on several models of Kenmore sewing machines. For sewing machines that do have adjustable stitch length, there are three ways of changing the length based on the model of sewing machine you have, all of which are easily detected no matter which model you are using.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the stitch length lever, either up and down or left to right, to set the stitch size. This lever is typically located near the top right of the machine and can be recognized by the numbers immediately next to the lever. The size is listed as numbers between 0 and 5 and the exact numbers displayed varies by machine. Some will only display even numbers while others display the entire series of numbers.

Press the ̶0;+̶1; or ̶0;-̶0; button on the touch screen to adjust stitch size. These buttons are located directly below the stitch indicator that displays your current stitch design. When making a button hole there will be two sets, one to indicate the width of the button hole and one for the stitch length. Adjust each accordingly for your project.

    • 3

Rotate the round stitch length selection dial to the desired number. This dial is almost always located on the right side of the machine. Do not confuse it with the tension dial that will be located to the upper right hand side of the needle assembly. As with the slide levers not all numbers may be displayed. Some dials also have half lengths, indicated by dots or indentations, which provide more options for stitch size.

On some older models, there are two dials. One is for the stitch length while the other is for the stitch width. The stitch length dial is the one with the push button in the center that is used for reverse stitching.
