How to Create a Basting Stitch With the Singer Sewing Machine

Sew a basting stitch to test the seam placement prior to a permanent stitching. This type of stitch is helpful when you are not sure that your garment fits properly or when you need to hold your fabric in place because it keeps sliding around on your Singer sewing machine. These wide stitches are easy to remove with a seam ripper, and you do not have to worry about cutting through back-stitching or marring the fabric with noticeable stitching holes.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the "Stitch length selection" dial. The dial is on the front right side on the majority of Singer sewing machine models.

    • 2

Turn the dial to select the longest stitch length option.

    • 3

Align the edge of the fabric with the 5/8-inch mark under the presser foot. Then, lower the presser foot.

    • 4

Grip the sides of the fabric with your hands to depress the foot pedal of the sewing machine while gently sliding the fabric away from you. This will sew a line of wide basting stitches and avoid back-stitching.

    • 5

Raise the presser foot, and remove the fabric from your Singer sewing machine. Trim the thread close to the fabric.
