Tutorial on a Scrappy Strip Pieced Quilt Block

Scrappy strip piece quilt, sometimes referred to as scrappy string quilts, are made by sewing leftover scraps of fabric together instead of planning squares and purchasing coordinating fabric. The pieces produce a very busy look to the finished quilt. Once the scraps are sewn together, a border and backing are added to complete the design.
  1. Layouts

    • Scrappy pieces are used to create almost any type of quilt block. Types of quilt blocks to consider are four, five, seven or nine patches; log cabin, or court house step layouts. Each of these blocks is made by sewing strips of fabric together to form the pattern and then cut or trimmed into new strips. Each of these piece pattern blocks use small pieces of fabric and can be sized to make any quilt.

    Placement of the Pieces

    • Typically, pieces are placed in a diagonal pattern across the square. This allows even the shortest pieces to be used. The diagonal placement enables you to make a full square in any size that when sewn together with other squares, resembles multicolored diamond shapes on the finished quilt. For log cabin or courthouse step layouts, the pieces are placed horizontally and vertically to create the pattern.

    Pieces

    • The pieces in a scrappy strip quilt are rarely of equal width or length. Some pieces will be as small as an inch wide, which allows for the 1/4 inch seam allowance on each side of the strip to sew them together, while others may be several inches wide. The length is also not important, as long as it will extend all the way across the block size that you are making. If you have pieces that are very short, those can be used to fill in corners of the square block and longer pieces are used on longer areas of the square.

    Colors

    • In scrappy quilts, there are a lot more colors than in most other types of quilts. These colors are not typically coordinated with the color wheel, nor are they placed into any sort of pattern. The beauty of the quilt is derived from how well the pieces work together without such coordination. The colorful quilts match everything and can be used in any room of the house. Larger scraps, of a yard or more, can be used to make borders around the quilt to help give it a more planned look.
